2020: A Year of Recognition

ANA Enterprise will be celebrating nurses all-year-long through our main initiatives.

YEAR OF THE NURSE 2020

Globally, the nursing profession is celebrating a milestone in 2020, as the World Health Organization declares it the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.

CERTIFIED NURSES DAY

Every March 19, on Certified Nurses Day™, employers, certification boards, education facilities, and healthcare providers celebrate and publicly acknowledge nurses who earn and maintain the highest credentials in their specialty through national board certification.

NURSES MONTH

Because one week is not enough, ANA will celebrate nurses for the entire month of May! This will expand opportunities to recognize nurses’ contributions, promote self-care and professional development, educate our communities about what nurses do, and inspire future generations of the profession.

A Year of Giving

The American Nurses Foundation has created the Coronavirus Response Fund for Nurses to enable the public to support and thank nurses.

The national fund will address the identified, emerging needs of nurses and will focus on:

  • Providing direct financial assistance to nurses
  • Supporting the mental health of nurses — today and in the future
  • Ensuring nurses everywhere have access to the latest science-based information to protect themselves, prevent infection, and care for those in need
  • Driving the national advocacy focused on nurses and patients

This national effort is being kicked off with a $1.5 million grant from

A Year of Stories

Throughout the rapidly evolving COVID-19 crisis, dedicated and resilient nurses are ensuring everyone has the care they need. No matter the day or circumstance, nurses are there to make a difference. The Year of the Nurse is a great opportunity to raise public awareness of nursing and nurses’ commitment to those they serve. And there’s no better way than with a story. Your unique journey can help communicate who nurses are, what you do, and how you contribute your expertise to improve health.

Be Recognized!

Submit your photo for a chance to be part of our official Year of the Nurse commemoration! Our recognition initiatives will feature YOU and your fellow nurses at work, at home with family and friends, or advocating for the community. Now’s your chance to be a part of it.

A Year of Photos:
Faces of the Frontlines

Nurses everywhere are heroes on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response. Through powerful imagery, we want to highlight the dedication, hope, and courage of you, our health care heroes. Submit a picture that captures how you are affected by COVID-19 — whether it’s caring for patients, supporting your fellow health care workers, or finding a moment to recharge amidst the chaos.

A Year of Development — The Nightingale Challenge

Launched in June 2019 by Nursing Now, the Nightingale Challenge is a global initiative to galvanize nurses into leadership and development opportunities both in and outside of health care. The global aim is to have at least 20,000 nurses and midwives aged 35 and under benefitting from this initiative in 2020, with at least 1,000 organizations taking part.

ANA Enterprise is leading Nursing Now USA with selected partners and, through the Nightingale Challenge, is focused on leadership and professional development opportunities for all nurses.
